Still kind of ‘new’, but well over a billion downloads of this video-based app during their first year of operation. TikTok claim well over 800 million monthly users. This does make them one of the top social media platforms in the world in terms of sheer user figures. Some content has lead to controversial actions and negative attention.

Who is there?

Almost ½ of the TikTok audience is under the age of 35. The vast majority of that audience are concentrated amongst those between the ages of 16 to 24.

Is it for us?

If you’re wondering whether a meaningful segment of your audience spends time on the platform, the answer may be a qualified yes. You Should Prioritize TikTok if:

  • Your target demographic is 16-24 years of age
  • Your are able to entertain your target audience with your content
  • You can provide content unrelated to your product or service
As part of TikTok some fun challenges have gone viral. However, a few of these challenges have lead to criminal mischief and your brand may not benefit over all.

Suggested Content

Content that may work best on TikTok is likely:

  • Entertaining
  • Comedic
  • nonsensical
  • Interesting for teens up to mid-twenties
  • Using catchy music, jingles or tunes
The priority on this channel is entertainment and strong self-promotion of business or brand may not play well. Imagine catchy music-video style content that is comedic.

Caution:

You are spending your budget on a website and want visitors to come “here”. Thus, we strongly suggest to use social media links sparingly! The example you should note on our sample sites is

  • SMALL icons
  • FAINT colours
  • DON’T use their bright colours!
  • DON’T put links prominently in the header region or anywhere ‘above the fold’!

You want to attract user to YOUR site to read YOUR content and perhaps buy YOUR product. So, WHY would you present them with an invitation/opportunity to leave right at the opening/loading of your page (when those links are placed in the header region and made prominent with their brand colours)?
