Facebook

About them:

At this time Facebook is hands down the largest social media site in the world with close to 2¼ billion monthly users. That means there are lots of visitors but it also means your contribution may be lost in the mix of offers.

Who is there?

Nearly ¾ of the adult population in North America admit to using Facebook and about ½ visit multiple times during a day. Gender is evenly represented amongst the users and activity increases in the over 40 age bracket. FB has now developed a somewhat negative reputation amongst younger users who turning to alternative services.

Is it for us?

If you’re wondering whether a meaningful segment of your audience spends time on the platform, the answer is almost surely a resounding yes. You Should Prioritize FaceBook if:

  • You want to reach an audience of adults
  • Your target audience is over the age of 30
  • You want to engage an online community through groups
  • You have interesting headlines
  • You have engaging graphics or short video clips

Suggested Content

Content that may work best on Facebook:

  • Company or industry news and events
  • short videos
  • attention grabbing graphics
  • other visually appealing content
  • a business page
  • a group focused on specific interest, customers or employees
  • polls and
  • Groups, unlike business pages are not intended for advertising. However, your brand or cause may benefit from like-minded people knowing where to congregate! Controversial and polarizing news (within the acceptable use policies) and unique articles are likely to go viral on Facebook or at least capture the attention of your intended audience. Keep your videos short, use vivid images and incorporate bold headlines from your own site to attract an audience. Use conversation starters in group discussions for the group you create. Draw attention back to your own site with polls and surveys.

Caution:

You are spending your budget on a website and want visitors to come “here”. Thus, we strongly suggest to use social media links sparingly! The example you should note on our sample sites is

  • SMALL icons
  • FAINT colours
  • DON’T use their bright colours!
  • DON’T put links prominently in the header region or anywhere ‘above the fold’!

You want to attract user to YOUR site to read YOUR content and perhaps buy YOUR product. So, WHY would you present them with an invitation/opportunity to leave right at the opening/loading of your page (when those links are placed in the header region and made prominent with their brand colours)?

Notice also that on our sample sites the icon link to these info pages. As a result we can capture the attention of our visitor one more time… Alternately we could direct hem to the contacts page (where the real links to social media exists) or some other preferred flow…
